By using physical activities and creative play, instead of direct talk, we match a child’s developmental stage. Children use toys, animals, drawing, sandtrays and storytelling as their primary language to express & process complex feelings, which they are not able to verbalise.
Adult therapy relies heavily on direct conversation, introspection, verbal processing and abstract cognitive strategies.
Children often show distress through behavioural changes such as meltdowns, withdrawal or aggression.
Equine therapy helps children to regulate their emotions, build confidence and express their feelings and problems to a pony whom they have bonded with [1] and experience reciprocal trust.
Children learn emotional regulation, patience & mindfulness as ponies react directly to children’s mood & body language.
Non verbal interactions bridge the gap to better verbal and social skills esp. for children who find traditional therapy intimidating.
[1] Ponies provide a non judgemental environment allowing children to practice setting healthy boundaries
